Local Value

Since 2014, each exhibition of the National Salon, organised by the Műcsarnok in five-year cycles, has been devoted to a different branch of the arts. The 3rd National Salon of Architecture, titled Local Value, is an invitation to think together: it seeks to create a framework for unbiased contemplation, encouraging everybody to gain a deeper understanding of today’s architecture, which not only reflects but also shapes the culture of our era. Our exhibition, which seeks to summarise the architecture of the past five years in Hungary and beyond its borders, has the sigma symbol as its logo. Visitors can explore a wide range of architectural ideas, grouped around issues arising from the pivotal challenges of our times. They can decide whether or not they agree with the presented architectural approaches, and, resonating with the mathematical symbol of the exhibition title, they can contemplate the ‘product’ that results from multiplying the real (own) value of a particular architectural intervention or building and the local value of its place. The Sigma sign In our case, shaping the letter ‚E’ into a sigma symbol carries added meaning, as it represents the sum. Metaphorically, this signifies a summation, an epitome, or the very essence of something, thereby referencing the state of architecture. Indeed, a building and its creation are the sum total of various factors. It depends on the client, the function, the zeitgeist, the architect’s capabilities, regulations, technology, the contractor, financials, and so much more...
